Great Barrier Reef from Airlie Beach: Pontoon, Sailing Trip or Fly Raft?
4 min read
If your priority is time in the water on the outer reef, book a pontoon or jetboat day; if you want the reef plus Whitehaven Beach, choose a trip that combines them. The trips below reach the reef in different ways, and that decides how much of your day is spent snorkelling.
Four ways to see the reef
A pontoon day. The Great Barrier Reef Adventure Cruise lasts 10 hours and costs €205.26. It goes to Reefworld, a pontoon moored 39 nautical miles offshore at Hardy Reef. Snorkelling gear, a buffet lunch, morning and afternoon tea, a semi-submersible tour and the underwater observatory are included; scuba diving, the guided snorkel and drinks from the bar cost extra. It has 4.6/5 from 385 reviews.
A jetboat to the outer reef plus Whitehaven. The Great Barrier Reef and Whitehaven Beach tour takes 8 hours and costs €207.76. You snorkel from the back of the boat at Bait Reef Lagoon or Stepping Stones, then spend about two hours at Whitehaven Beach with lunch and walk to the Hill Inlet lookout up many stone steps. The booking page sets strict limits: not under 8 years or 130 cm, not over 70, no non-swimmers, and not for anyone pregnant, prone to seasickness or with back, heart or mobility problems.
Snorkelling on a Whitehaven or sailing trip. Several trips snorkel the fringing reefs around the islands rather than the outer reef. The Providence day sail describes snorkelling the fringing Great Barrier Reef and costs €130.40. The overnight racing-yacht trip lists snorkelling of vibrant reefs over two days and costs €308.83. These are closer to the islands, with more sailing and beach time, but fewer hours at the outer reef.
From the air. The Fly Raft package costs €352.50 and combines a scenic flight over the reef with a raft ride to Whitehaven Beach, a bushwalk to the Hill Inlet lookout and snorkelling. If you only want the view, the scenic flight over the Whitsundays and reef lasts 70 minutes and costs €199.02.
| Option | Listed duration | Reef reached |
|---|---|---|
| Reef pontoon cruise | 10 hours | Reefworld pontoon at Hardy Reef |
| Jetboat reef and Whitehaven | 8 hours | Outer reef |
| Providence day sail | 9 hours to a full day | Fringing reef |
| Fly Raft package | 1 day | Flight over the reef, snorkelling after the raft ride |
If you do not want to swim
A reef trip does not have to mean getting wet. The pontoon day above includes the underwater observatory and a semi-submersible ride. For something much shorter, the glass-bottom boat tour leaves from the Shute Harbour Marine Terminal, lasts 1 hour and costs €61.77; it looks at the local coral reefs among the islands rather than the outer reef and stops first at Lions Lookout. It is rated 4.2/5 from 272 reviews; the page excludes wheelchair users and walking frames.
Season and safety
Marine stingers are in tropical Queensland waters all year, but the Queensland Government puts the higher-risk season between November and May and recommends considering a full-body lycra suit. Ask the operator what is supplied for your date. Heart Reef itself cannot be snorkelled, according to Tourism and Events Queensland; it is a flight-only sight, covered in our Heart Reef flight guide.
Our recommendation
For most people the pontoon cruise is the dedicated reef day. Pick the Fly Raft package if you would rather see the reef from above and still swim at Whitehaven. Browse everything under Great Barrier Reef tours.
