How Much Does a Day in Airlie Beach Cost? Four Budgets Compared

4 min read

What a day here costs depends on how long you are out and on what the price includes. An hour on a paddleboard, a guided morning on the mainland, a full day on the islands, and a flight or a trip with nights on board are four different budgets, and the island days differ a lot in what you get for the money.

Short hires and an evening on the water

At the low end are a stand-up paddleboard rental at €17.47 per person for 1 hour and a double kayak from Shingley Beach at €61.77 for the whole kayak, up to two people, for 1.5 hours. Both start on Shingley Drive in Cannonvale; neither includes food. In the evening, the 2-hour sunset cruise with sparkling wine costs €46.79; it leaves from Coral Sea Marina and includes a glass of sparkling wine and nibbles, with further drinks from the bar on board.

Guided outings on the mainland

The 1-hour jet ski safari is €122.91 per rider. You meet at a cafe at Port of Airlie, and transfers, food and drinks are not included. The rainforest bushwalk with an optional swim at Cedar Creek Falls, listed at 4 hours, is €74.87, with pickup in Airlie Beach and snacks.

A day on the islands

The half-day Whitehaven cruise is listed at 7 hours and costs €96.70. It leaves either in the morning (7:15 am to 2:30 pm) or around midday (11:35 am to 6:10 pm), includes morning or afternoon tea and stinger suits, and spends up to two hours at the southern end of Whitehaven Beach, with a walk to the southern lookout. The booking page says plainly that it does not go to Hill Inlet and that you change boats at Hamilton Island, and asks you to bring money or a card for purchases on board. It has 1,808 reviews at 4.2/5.

The full-day eco-cruise with buffet lasts 8 hours and costs €155.98, rated 4.8/5 from 3,338 reviews. For that price the page lists pickup from Airlie Beach, Cannonvale or Jubilee Pocket, two snorkelling stops at Hook Island with mask and snorkel, a buffet lunch on Whitehaven Beach, morning and afternoon snacks, a guided walk to the Hill Inlet lookout, stinger or wetsuit hire and park fees. You are back at your accommodation around 5 pm. Children under 4 and wheelchair users are excluded.

The raft trip with snorkelling is listed at 6.5 hours and costs €155.35. It includes pickup, snorkelling gear, lunch on Whitehaven Beach and morning and afternoon tea; drinks are sold on board by card, and on Queensland public holidays the page lists a surcharge of $20 per adult, paid at check-in. Pregnant women and people with back problems are excluded. Each of these three trips pairs the beach with snorkelling or a lookout, so the Whitehaven comparison is the next read.

In the air and overnight

The Whitsundays and Great Barrier Reef scenic flight costs €199.02 for 70 minutes in the air, plus an included van transfer of about 30 minutes each way to Laguna Quays Airport. Passengers over 130 kg are excluded. The tandem skydive costs €196.53, with a surcharge above 94 kg, a limit of 110 kg and a minimum age of 16. The 2-night sailing trip with meals costs €364.98 and covers meals, snacks, snorkelling gear and site fees, with nights in dorm-style bedding on board. It is listed as 3 days, but you are back at the marina on the third morning, around 8 to 9 am. For flights see the Heart Reef flight guide.

What to check before comparing

A price only compares if you know what it covers. Among the island days, the full-day eco-cruise and the raft trip include lunch, while the half-day cruise includes only morning or afternoon tea. Group pricing is the second trap: the double kayak is priced per kayak for up to two, the others per person. And cancellation: every other trip here can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before, the half-day Whitehaven cruise only up to 2 days before.

Our recommendation

For one big day, the full-day eco-cruise has the most reviews of any trip here and puts snorkelling, lunch and the Hill Inlet lookout in one price. On a tight budget, the half-day cruise still gives you up to two hours on Whitehaven Beach, but not Hill Inlet. See the full list of things to do for the rest.
