Kayak and Paddle Trips from Airlie Beach: Guided, Self-Guided or SUP?

4 min read

Five yellow and orange sea kayaks pulled up on a pale beach beside a rocky headland, with clear turquoise water and distant islands under a blue sky

For a first paddle, a guided tour is the easier choice: the guide picks the route and the stops. If you want to go at your own pace for an hour or so, the self-guided double kayak or a paddleboard rental is cheaper. The options below range from 1 to 3 hours, and they start in two places: Shute Harbour and Shingley Drive in Cannonvale, next to Coral Sea Marina.

Guided tours

Over the coral from Shute Harbour. The Half-Day Island Kayak Tour over Coral Reefs costs €77.99 for 3 hours and is rated 4.6/5 from 33 reviews. According to the booking page, it leaves from Shute Harbour and paddles over fringing coral reefs among the nearby islands, with a stop at White Rock or Cane Cockie’s Beach for a swim, cold drinks and light refreshments. Snorkelling is possible depending on tide and weather, and the page names humpback whales as a chance between July and September. Pickup is included, the group is up to 16, and kayaks, snorkelling gear and dry bags are provided. Children under 7 are excluded, and every child needs an adult of their own.

Turtles and birds from Shingley Beach. The Turtle & Birdlife Sea Kayaking Tour is listed at 3 hours and costs €68.01, rated 4.7/5 from 25 reviews. You meet at the operator’s base at 117 Shingley Drive, Cannonvale. The page itself puts the tour at about 2.5 hours and about 6 km of paddling past three beaches, with toilet stops and a swim if the tide allows. It asks for a medium level of fitness, a minimum age of 10, the ability to swim and enough English to follow instructions, and sets a maximum of 110 kg per person; the group is up to 8. Turtles are the aim, but wildlife is never guaranteed.

Doing it yourself

The double kayak. The double kayak hire from Shingley Beach lasts 1.5 hours and costs €61.77 per group of up to two, so the price is for the kayak, not per person. It is self-guided: the suggested route runs from Shingley Beach to Turtle Bay at Cannonvale Beach, where the page suggests a coffee at the beach cafe, and back. The description says 95% of guests spot turtles on that route and that manta rays are seen on occasion; that figure is the operator’s own claim. All gear is included and a storage locker is available. The page excludes non-swimmers; if you bring children, ask the operator about ages before booking.

The paddleboard. The stand-up paddleboard rental costs €17.47 per person for 1 hour. It starts at 115 Shingley Drive, from the same operator, with a safety briefing and tips; toilets and outdoor showers are available, and a locker on request. It has no reviews yet. The page carries a “wheelchair accessible” label without saying how that works on a paddleboard, so ask the operator before relying on it.

Paddling as part of a sailing day

The Luxe Sail SUP & Snorkel day costs €142.25 for 6 hours aboard Wings III, a 60-foot air-conditioned sailing catamaran, rated 4.8/5 from 139 reviews. It runs from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm from Coral Sea Marina (meet at 8:50 am) and heads for the Hook Island area, with snorkelling, paddleboards and a clear-bottomed kayak at Langford Island. Morning tea and lunch are included; drinks are bring-your-own, and transfers to the marina are not included. The page says children 5 and over only, up to 29 guests, and that this trip does not go to Whitehaven Beach.

Before you book

The turtle tour and the double kayak exclude non-swimmers; the other pages say nothing about swimming, so ask if someone in your group cannot swim. Pairs who share a kayak should compare the double-kayak price for two with twice the per-person price of a guided tour. With children, the ages decide: from 7 on the Shute Harbour tour, from 10 on the turtle tour, and from 5 on the sailing day.

Our recommendation

Choose the guided island tour over the coral for reefs, islands and a guide, with pickup included. The turtle tour suits fitter paddlers from 10 who want about 6 km with a guide. Take the double kayak for a short, cheap paddle with turtles in mind. For the islands by boat instead, see Whitsundays sailing trips or the full list of things to do.
