Skydiving over the Whitsundays: Standard Tandem or Beach Landing?

3 min read

A tandem pair under an open parachute, one waving, high above turquoise water, green islands and a white sand inlet

For most people the beach-landing skydive is the one to pick: its booking page guarantees the landing on the beach. The standard tandem skydive jumps over the same islands and uses several landing sites instead.

The two skydives

Both trips are listed at 4 hours in total, which is the whole outing, not the time in the air.

The Tandem Skydive over the Whitsundays costs €196.53. You jump from up to 15,000 feet, with up to 60 seconds of freefall and 5 to 7 minutes under the canopy; the operator uses several landing sites, which its page says gives more chances to jump. Return transfers run from selected locations in Airlie Beach. It is rated 4.8/5 from 1,014 reviews.

The Tandem Skydiving Experience with Beach Landing costs €223.98, with 4.9/5 from 520 reviews. Height, freefall and canopy time are the same; the difference is the guaranteed beach landing. A shuttle leaves from Wisdom Cafe on Shute Harbour Road, and the page warns that the return time is not guaranteed, so do not plan anything tight afterwards.

What to check before you pay

Both booking pages set the minimum age at 16, with written consent from a parent or guardian under 18, and both exclude pregnant women. The weight limits differ: 110 kg for the standard jump, with a surcharge above 94 kg, and 115 kg for the beach landing. Check them early if you are travelling with a group, because one person who does not qualify changes the plan. Photos and video cost extra on both.

Weather decides whether a jump happens. Skydiving needs clear conditions, so put the jump early in your stay and keep a spare day, and look at the cancellation terms on the page. Prices shown above are per person.

Skydive, flight or boat?

A skydive gives you the Whitsundays view for a few minutes of freefall and the canopy ride. If you want longer with the scenery, a scenic flight lasts about an hour and includes Heart Reef, which cannot be snorkelled according to Tourism and Events Queensland. If you want to be on Whitehaven Beach rather than above it, see Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet: eco-cruise, sailing boat or raft.

Our recommendation

Choose the beach-landing skydive if the landing matters to you or anyone in your group is between 110 and 115 kg. Choose the standard tandem skydive if you only want the jump and do not mind where you land. Both sit with the other adventures under scenic flights and skydiving.
